The Cat-Eye!
*MAC Barbie collection ad campaign*
Mastering the cat-eye is so much easier than it looks! I'll walk you through it in a few easy steps!
Here's what you'll need:
- eyeshadow primer
- neutral eyeshadow
- highlighter (lighter color eyeshadow to apply on brow-bone to highlight eyes and finish the look)
- cream eyeliner
- Kohl liner for bottom lid
- Small angle brush and/or pointed eyeliner brush
- Q-tip and eye-makeup remover for mistakes
- Mascara
Steps:
1. Prime eye.
This step is very important but often overlooked. An eyeshadow primer will prevent smudging and fading,
and if you have oily lids -like mine- a primer is a must! I swear by Urban Decay Primer Potion but there are
others that you can try : )
2. Apply Eyeshadow and highlighter.
You may use any color you like but for the purpose of this look I will recommend a neutral color (any
shimmery or matte gold, bronze, brown, or vanilla will do). Apply neutral color to lid, finish by LIGHTLY
sweeping highlight color to brow-bone. Applying a highlight is a small step that makes a BIG difference
(read: not a harsh, white line). The highlight should be just a few shades lighter than your skin tone and
when applied to the brow-bone, polishes the look.
Now, the fun stuff : )
3. Dip (clean) angled or pointed eyeshadow brush into cream eyeliner.
(You have several choices in choosing an eyeliner, on a higher price point there is the tried and true MAC
Fluid-line. Also, Makeup Forever Aqua Cream-liner is a good choice with a slightly more clay-like
consistency. There are others, but these are my favorites : )
On a lower price point, I have heard very good things about L'Oreal H.I.P. Color Truth cream eyeliner!)
4. Gently stretch outer corner of eye outward to create a smooth surface, rest elbow on the
counter/table, steady hand against forehead and draw a thin line from the inner corner to the middle of
eyelid.
5. Dip again (if needed) and continue line from the middle of the eyelid outward, gradually getting
thicker and finish with a (small) flick of the wrist at the outer-corner of the eye to create the winged look.
6. GENTLY fix any mistakes with Q-tip dipped in eye-makeup remover.
7. GENTLY pull lower lid downward and apply Kohl liner to water line.
8. Finish with mascara and you're done!
...Going out after work???
9. Be daring and extend that upper line in a Rihanna-esque bad girl cat-eye! A quick touch-up on the
rest of your makeup, throw on your freak-um dress, and GET 'EM GIRL!!
...to...
As you become a master of the sexy cat-eye, have some fun with it! Play with different colors and shapes,
create your own rules! Remember, these are just guidelines! The steps that I have provided for you are not
set in stone, do what works for you and let me know how it goes!!
